A Square in São Cristovão is made a World Heritage Site.

The São Francisco Square in the tiny town of São Cristovão, 24 km from Aracaju, in Sergipe State, was last week awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO. This unique site is the only Square in Brazil to have been designed and created in the urban Spanish style. It was constructed during the period of the “Iberian Union” (1558 – 1640), when Spain and Portugal were united. With this most recent nomination, Brazil now boasts 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
